Historique :	Ils proviennent probablement du navire Le Dauphin (1854). Le fort avait été construit pendant la guerre de Crimée, au cas où une armée du tsar viendrait jusqu'à Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon pour s'en emparer, par un détachement d'infanterie et d'artillerie de marine. les canons ont été amenés par un navire de guerre. Ils sont d'une production courante du 19e siècle. Le terme de caronades est évoqué pour ces canons. Jean Chapelot propose comme autre raison logique de l'installation d'une batterie et contre-batterie à Saint-Pierre, un rapport de confiance établi avec la Grande-Bretagne (Ile-aux-Marins et Pointe-aux-Canons). Il y a en effet des périodes de tension avec les Anglais pendant le Second Empire dans ce secteur. Des recherches plus approfondies aux archives de Vincennes pourraient apporter de nouveaux éléments.
